3 Ways to Get Ripped Abs

How many commercials have you seen promising 6 pack abs from the latest ab workout? Does it ever work? Never! Here's a better way to get abs.

In my opinion, all you need to do to get 6-pack abs is this...

Lose belly fat with nutrition, intervals, and resistance training.

More specifically...

First, start by improving the quality of the food you eat. No more processed carbohydrates, no more sugar, no more deep-fried foods, no more fast food, and no more sodas or juices. Simply making these changes will help you lose stomach fat fast, and you'll drop your body fat percentage in just days.

Stop doing crunches. Spend that time on intervals instead. Doing hundreds of crunches won't get you results. And doing long, slow boring cardio is also an inefficient way to burn belly fat and see your 6-pack abs.

According to researchers from Australia, including Professor Steve Boucher, the only way to spot reduce belly fat is to use interval training. Intervals destroy body fat.

Once you've taken care of your nutrition, resistance training, and interval training, you can start with basic abdominal workouts. Here's what you need to know, and this will surprise you!

1) Beginners should stay the heck away from situps and crunch-type movements until they master the Plank, Side Plank, and Bird Dog.

Don't do situps.

2) Here are some my favorite no-crunch ab movements for intermediate exercisers...

a) the Stability Ball Rollout (also can be done with the Ab Wheel or as a Barbell Rollout)

b) the Stability Ball Jackknife

c) the Plank with Your Arms on the Ball (which according to research quoted in Mens Health, this exercise works your abs 30% harder thanregular Plank - all without messing your low back).

Okay, so I've given my controversial advice about what beginners and intermediate fitness levels should do for abs...Get ready for Men's Health expert Craig Ballantyne to reveal his belly fat burning strategies.

But first, I want to mention some "unknown" ab builders...

a) The Elevated Pushup

b) Straight Arm Cable Pullover

c) Front Squat

d) DB Pullover & even DB Triceps Extensions with extra stretch

All great total body moves to have in your program to burn calories and build abs at the same time.

3) What do you really need to do to bring out your abs once you have your body fat low?

My favorite advanced ab exercise is Cable Crunches, which are without a doubt, the best resistance exercise for building abs. There are several ways to do them, with one version being safer but just as effective as all other versions.

The big message I like to get across to clients is that they can build 6-pack abs without ever doing a single crunch while lying on their backs.

It shocks people, but it is true. If you want to lose stomach fat fast and see your six pack abs, focus on your nutrition, total body strength training, and interval training before you even consider adding more reps to your current ab workout.

Men's Health expert Craig Ballantyne has designed the trademarked Turbulence Training home fat burning workouts to help thousands of men and women with weight loss and fat burning in less than 45 minutes three times per week. Craig's workouts help you burn fat without long, slow cardio sessions or fancy equipment. Craig's beginner bodyweight workouts for fat loss help you lose fat without any equipment at all.

The Increased Resistance Abs Exercise

You can use a decline bench to provide increased resistance in your oblique muscle ab workouts, because with this equipment you use the greater bulk of your body weight to give the brunt of the load taken by your midsection area. Because the decline bench is ordinarily used to target the front abdominals during ab workouts, you will have to do variations in your movements by doing a twisting motion as you crunch your lower body upwards. If performed correctly, they will effectively tone down the abdominal muscle group known as the external obliques. Remember that for best results, it is advised that you observe the proper execution.

Prepare the decline bench for your ab workouts by setting it at a slightly steep angle of at least 35 degrees. Then position your body by lying on the decline with both of your feet locked in to it. See to it that your upper body is at an angle which is perpendicular to the bench, so that you have to contract your midsection in order to stay in place during them. Place your hands on the sides of your head and take a deep breath.

Begin by deliberately, but slowly contracting your right oblique abdominals; this movement will then cause your torso to twist to your left. Then try to reach your left knee with your right elbow in order to get the best crunch for your ab workouts. If you feel that you have curled as far as you comfortably can, finish off them by unwinding your body and returning to your first position.

For the succeeding repetition, you basically just have to reverse the movement in the ab workouts; this time contracting the left oblique and reaching your right knee with your left elbow. Alternate these motions until you have performed up to 15 repetitions for each side.

The Best Exercises For Lower Abs

Is there a best exercise for lower abs? A lot of people may say that you can't specifically exercise your lower abs, upper abs or in fact target any individual portion of a single muscle group. They're technically right - you can't isolate specific bits of your muscles, including upper and lower abs exercises. BUT.. that doesn't mean you shouldn't train your muscles from different angles. We do know that joint mechanics and angles of exertion will stimulate different levels of fibers within your muscles, so while it's a good idea to train from several angles, don't expect to be able to correct or shape your muscles as they grow.

So, on to the best exercise for lower abs. Your lower abs are mostly used as a stabiliser for your core and when you perform difficult movements with your legs, while your upper abs are used mostly in relation to your general upper torso, shoulders and back. The obvious route then for exercising your lower abs is to make use of your legs to perform the workout.

One of the best exercises for lower abs: vertical leg crunches

Lie on your back with your hands resting underneath your lower back for support. Cross your ankles over and keeping your legs as straight as you can, lift your feet up 20-24" into the air. Hold for 1-2 seconds, then lower them so they're just off the floor, but don't let them rest. Lift again, and lower. Repeat the raising and lowering 10-12 times slowly, then rest for 90-120 seconds before doing another set.

Be careful not to strain your back while doing this lower abs exercise. Rest your head on the floor so your upper abs are left out of the equation as much as possible, and don't arch your back. Your hands under your lower back are there partially for support, and partially to remind your not to flex your back too much.

Another of the best exercises for lower abs: the Captain's chair

This lower abs exercise requires some equipment, but you can probably find it in your local gym, and if you don't have access to the gym you may be able to construct something simple at home. The apparatus you need is basically a chair with the seat removed and with two upright handles like joysticks on the arms, so that when you have your forearms on the arm rests you can hold onto the handles. The chair is fixed to the wall a few feet off the ground, and the exercise is as follows.

Stand in front of the chair between the arm rests, and grip onto the handles. The chair should be at an appropriate height so you can reach these comfortably. Contract your lower abs and lift your knees to your chest, placing your weight on your forearms on the arm rests. Pull your knees as high as you can, hold for 1-2 seconds and gently lower them again, but not all the way to the ground. Repeat this motion 10-12 times, and take a rest of 90-120 seconds between sets.

These are two of the best exercises for lower abs, and will give you plenty of strength and definition both in your general core muscles and in your lower abs.

How To Get Six Pack Abs - Do You Want Abs Fast?

Most of us at some stage of our life have decided enough is enough! I'm going to loose this gut. So we trim down the level of our eating and either buy some cardio equipment or go down to our local gym to sweat away with the others that have given into this method. Most people after a short period of time will see little or no gains & with a break from training of a week they find they are right back where they started to begin with.

I'll tell you right - This cardio training method above is a waste of time.

Thats right a complete waste of time, if anything is only going to damaged your motivation levels or cause you to have a injury as a result of going crazy doing cardio for hours on end out of pure frustration.

It may seem logical to us all that if we drop the levels of our eating this will assist loss of fat, well ill tell you right now this is very far from the truth! By doing this, we make our body confused as it now believes it has to reserve all fat stores until we know when we are going to get our next meal. This process only takes 3 hours, thats 3 hours of not eating and our body is already in starvation mode, our metabolism slows down and we now are trying to keep our fat. Ok so eat more, thats right more meals 5 - 6 a day and spaced out in 2.5 hr increments. After doing this for a period of a week your body will feel quiet comfortable with going into overdrive 24/7 & you will become a natural fat burning furnace.

The next thing you need to look at is your current muscle mass. The more muscle you have the more your body will want to convert your fat to fuel to be used. So you do need to start doing some weight bearing activity's. I highly recommend you write down what you eat over a period of 2 weeks and sit down to see what you can do in order to drop some fat and increase your energy levels. You should be trying to add more foods that are high in protein and alter some of your meals that are full of fats.

Sit Up Exercises for Toned Abs - Are They for Everyone?

Contrary to popular belief, sit ups are an effective form of exercise, and as such, are one of the very best things that you could do for yourself. Although lots of people will say to you that there are superior abdominal exercises that you might do, it can't be denied that the sit up is right up there with the finest of them when it comes to working your abdominal muscles to get toned flat abs, or when you want to get the definition known as a "six pack".

Sit ups will not give you an added benefit unless they are properly executed. This is probably the reason that sit ups have earned a bad reputation. If sit ups are not executed with the right technique and form, then you will only be doing sit ups for the sake of doing sit ups. Proper execution is therefore, essential to the efficiency of sit ups as an abdominal firming exercise.

An additional, thing that you will want to learn about sit ups, is that no matter how excellent they are to use in your workout, sit ups performed badly can result in injuries to the neck, back and shoulder area predominantly. However, this is only if you do not perform the sit ups properly. This is also why it is a good idea for you to get suitable guidance and coaching on the proper way to do sit ups before you truly embark on a course of action which involves your doing any exercises sit ups in particular.

It is important that when you are doing any form of exercise sit ups included; that you make sure that you are doing exercise which is appropriate for your own individual level of fitness. Without this precaution, you may be over taxing yourself, which can in and of itself result in an injury.

Prior to embarking on a course of exercise, the best thing that you can do is to either seek advice from a doctor about what you should and shouldn't do, or go in for a routine physical checkup so that you can know where you stand on the scale of things.

Lastly it is important to realize that starting an exercise program should not be undertaken lightly. You can do it on your own and you can be trained how to do all of these exercises on your own, although unless you know how to do them correctly, using the accurate form and technique, you will find that you are simply not getting as much advantage from your exercises, sit ups included, as you would if you were executing it the way it was designed to be. This is the reason why it's always good if you can first of all get correct training on how to go about things, from a professional who knows what they're doing.
