To have flat abs you need to workout hard at the gym, but the results are worth it.
Burn off belly fat
To really see those abs pop out, you need to reduce your stomach fat. It's very hard to target fat loss from a specific body part, so what you're really going for is overall fat reduction. Most people who do this get it wrong by doing lengthy cardiovascular workouts at a steady pace, thinking that the length of the exercise is more important than the intensity of it. The right thing to do would be to do interval cardio: a few minutes of high intensity cardio like sprinting, followed by a few minutes of lower intensity like jogging. Do this a few times over and you've got a more effective workout than a regular cardio workout and in less the time. Once you've got the fat burning process going, you'll be well on your way to those perfect hard abs.
